Going to Greylock

Greylock is the hub both factions share, and the gateway to the higher-tier breaches and their better loot.

Greylock is a gate fort that both factions share. It is where the game opens up: harder breaches, better loot, and enemy pilots docked next to you.

A contested hub

Both factions are present in Greylock, but the hub itself is safe to fly in, the same as your home hub. Duels are still fights to the death, here as anywhere. A faction's hub admits only that faction's members, while a neutral hub like Greylock is open to everyone.

Greylock also hosts the blueprint and industry merchant, the one blueprint source besides loot and your Quartermaster.

Higher-tier breaches

The higher-tier breaches unlock from Greylock, and that is where the better loot is. You clear each tier by extracting from it before the next opens, and deeper tiers roll more ports and rarer items.

They also take bigger ships. Build-rating limits per tier:

TierBuild rating
Stratum 1up to 6,000
Stratum 2up to 8,000
Stratum 36,000 to 10,000
Stratum 48,000 to 13,000
Abyssal10,000 to 16,000
The Nest12,000 to 100,000
Deep Strata16,000 to 200,000

Figures differ for Nest Sanctum, a tier 5 breach: up to about 30K build rating, against 100,000 for The Nest in the table.

The breaches off Greylock are also where Dark Triton is found. Keep it for recipes rather than recycling it. A dev believes salvage luck may help a mixed ore node upgrade to Dark Triton; that is not confirmed.

Bosses known so far include the Shield of Amnion in Kassik's Drift (Deep Strata), the Brood Queen (The Nest), the Spear of Amnion (Stratum 4) and its tougher Uber Spear (Abyssal).

Relocating

Relocate moves you, not your ship, to another hub where you already have a ship docked. Since it needs a docked ship at the destination, your first arrival at Greylock has to be in a ship.

Your materials do not follow you either. Moving them between hubs is manual: you haul them yourself. A Hauler such as the Achamoth, Mammon or Augr is built for exactly that.

Before you haul, remember two things:

  1. Cargo counts toward build rating at 25%, which can put a loaded hauler over a breach's limit.
  2. Anything outside the safety hold is lost if the hauler dies. Since Beta Patch 2 every ship, haulers included, has four safety hold cells in a 2×2 square at the top left of its cargo grid; before, each hauler had two.

Tip

Move only what you need. Rare minerals and spare blueprints are worth the trip; common drops are better recycled where you are.

Related answers

  • Where is it safe? Can I avoid PvP?

Hubs are safe, including Greylock (a contested hub with both factions present). No breach is fully safe.

  • Where is the better loot?

In the higher-tier breaches you unlock from Greylock (the central hub).

  • What does Relocate do?

It moves you, not your ship, to another hub where you already have a ship docked.

  • Which minerals should I keep?

Keep rare ones like Dark Triton and Solstine for recipes.

  • Where do blueprints come from?

Loot, your faction Quartermaster, and a merchant in Greylock.

  • How do I extract? It keeps sending me back in.

Use the extraction markers (green boxes) and trains. Leaving a breach is only possible by train.

  • Why did my build rating go over the breach limit?

Cargo counts toward build rating at a reduced rate (25%).

  • What happens when my ship is destroyed?

Permadeath: you lose the ship, its fitted modules and its cargo, except what is in the safety hold.
